The SL500 is the first model in the SL5xx series. In terms of quality, like all devices in the series, it is classified below the T and R series. It is a consumer device, some typical ThinkPad features such as the ThinkLight or the docking station port are missing. The optical drive is permanently installed and the BIOS is also different.

The display lid has a piano lacquer finish. Another striking feature are the status LEDs on the front of the case - a design element that is also used on the L412 and L420. In general, the L series has adopted the design of the SL series.

At 15.4", the device is quite bulky. Despite a fair price, the device was quite unpopular - which is probably also due to the shiny display. The SL series was not produced for long and replaced by the E series. The piano lacquer look is very reminiscent of the S3x series. The notebook is strongly angled on the left and right side of the housing, which makes it unnecessarily difficult to use some devices.
