The X1 is the first and only device in the X1 series and was manufactured between 2011 and December 2012. It is the successor to the X301 and predecessor of the X1 Carbon Gen 1.

It was a very thin and light device by the standards of the time. When it was launched, the removal of the docking port and optical drive and the installation of a low-resolution display were criticised. As this has a Gorilla Corning Glass coating, it is reflective. Many experts also didn’t like the new screen diagonal of 16:9 instead of 16:10. The introduction of a new backlit keyboard also meant that the ThinkLight had to make way.

All in all, the design development that ultimately led to the X1 Carbon can be recognised in the X1 compared to the X301. The notebook has evolved from a practically timeless work tool to a lifestyle device.

To compensate for the rather short battery life of approx. 5.5 hours, the device can be extended with a Slice battery. There is a corresponding port on the underside for this purpose - the built-in battery cannot be replaced.

Interestingly, a special version called X1 Hybrid was released at CES 2012. This also has a replaceable circuit board with a Snapdragon APQ8060 SoC. This has a dual-core CPU with 1 GHz, 1 GB RAM and 16 GB flash with Android Honeycomb (Android 3.x) installed. The system can be activated at any time via a key combination, a reboot is not required. The start interface is reminiscent of the ThinkPad Tablet. The IMM (Instant Media Mode) mode is designed to extend the battery life to 10 hours.
