WiGig Dock
The ThinkPad WiGig Dock is a wireless docking station for some ThinkPads introduced in 2016:
- T460 and T460s
- X260
- X1 Yoga
- X1 Carbon Gen 4
- Yoga 260
The technology is based on WiGig, which is also often called Tri-Band Wi-Fi or 60 GHz Wi-Fi. The notebooks mentioned were only supported if a WLAN card was installed that supports the 802.11ad standard. This supports transmission speeds of up to 7 Gbit/s and can therefore also transmit broadband user data.
WiGig was specified by Intel in 2012, but never really caught on. This was probably due to the lack of 4K and HDR support as well as the quite expensive docking stations and network cards. Thunderbolt, which was developed at the same time, was better in many respects. WiGig also requires special drivers (including audio, Ethernet), which are not available for all operating systems.
The docking station is curious in that it has a conspicuous cube housing and was only built for a short time. It is often mistaken for a mini-computer.
