The PS/2 Model L40 SX is not a ThinkPad, but the first foldable IBM notebook - and thus (alongside the PS/Note) a direct predecessor of the ThinkPad brand. The device was launched in 1991 and already featured some of the design elements of later ThinkPads - such as the clamshell lid and the status LEDs below the screen.

One striking feature is an almost full-size keyboard (there was an optional external numeric keypad), above which unused case space can be seen. This space could be filled with appropriately cut templates - for example, if the keyboard layout does not match the one actually configured in the operating system.

The model has a battery, which is missing on my device, as well as a CMOS and standby battery. The latter is supposed to back up the contents of the RAM when the notebook is in power-saving mode.

I received my device as a gift when I was clearing out my flat. One of the cover flaps is missing, otherwise the device is functional. It is difficult to obtain a new BIOS battery as there are no spare parts available.
